Altered books are a fun activity for teens. Encourage them to
bring in their own photos, images, trinkets, quotes, poems,
song lyrics, etc. Make sure they are not originals since they’ll
wind up glued in a book. There are advanced techniques for
creating altered books, but many of them require a lot of
time, skill and patience. Using board books is a quick and
easy way to create a fantastic project.
Materials
Cost: Most things you will have on hand probably. Sandpaper is between .65 and .99 a sheet depending on how you buy it.
Old Board Books
Sand Paper
Modpodge or
Watered Down White Glue
Old Magazines
Beads, sequins, stickers,
Scrapbooking Materials, photos,
Quotes, Etc.
Scissors
Acrylic Paint
Markers (optional)
Directions
1. Using the sand paper, rub off the finish from the board book
2. Paint the pages of the book with acrylic paint. Let Dry.
3. While waiting for the paint to dry, find, assemble and cut out images, quotes, photos, etc. (from old magazines, old books, post cards, the internet and other sources).
4. Glue the images, quotes, photos, beads, etc. onto the pages. Decoupage works well for this. After gluing on the picture, go over it with a light coat of watered down glue or modpodge.
5. Allow to dry (make sure the pages aren’t touching)
6. Continuing gluing, painting and decorating your book until you’ve created your perfect work of art!
A library in Minnesota held an altered book contest for teens. Check it out for inspiration
