A Luau makes a great end of summer party! Play hula hoop games and do the limbo. Teach everyone to hula and make their own grass skirts and leis.
“GRASS” SKIRT(modified from the Louisiana SRP Manual 2005) Materials Plastic Garbage Bag or brown paper shopping bag Rope or String Scissors Packing Tape
Directions 1. Cut open the bag so it lies flat 2. Cut a piece of string several inches longer than the waste 3. Lay the string along the top of the bag 4. “Hem” the bag (about three inches) with tape 5. Cut the bottom of the bag into strips up to where the bag is hemmed. 7. Tie around waste and start to hula! (Boys can make “grass” wrist bands and anklets)
“FLOWERED” LEIS Materials Cupcake liners Straws String or yarn Scissors Hole puncher Directions 1. Cut the straws into 1-inch lengths 2. Punch holes in the center of cupcake liners 3. String the straws and cupcake liners alternating each. Tip #1: Wrap tape around yarn for easier threading. Tip #2: Use several different colored cupcakes liners at once to make a multi-colored flower. Tip #3: Fold the cupcake liners into thirds, then punch the hole and thread the yarn.
Hula Dancing Sami (who did our middle eastern dancing programs) also does Polynesian dancing! We could try to hire her to teach hula dancing at the luau.
